A 12-day wonderful holiday in July 2015 was arranged by Carolyn Hedley of The Luxury Holiday Company.
PERFECT PORTUGAL LUXURY HOLIDAY
A holiday experience as supplied by a Luxury Holiday Company traveller and client.
As experienced travellers we have visited Europe several times but never Portugal. We visited the areas of Lisbon, Madeira and Algarve coast.
In Lisbon we stayed in a lovely small boutique hotel located on the Av. DeLiberdadem. Lisbon has a laid back feel with its cobblestones streets and town squares where you can have a coffee or if preferred a drink and watch the world go by. We did a guided walking tour of the local area tasting their traditional pastries and sampling the national liquor (made from cherries). On one of the days we did a private full day tour visiting the Queluz National Palace, (known as the mini-Versailles Palace) and then onto the world heritage site of Sintra. While there we visited Pena Palace an incredible fantasy castle-like structure painted in many pastel colours, different from any castle we had previously seen.
To the Island of Madeira
After Lisbon, we travelled to the Island of Madeira. This was recommended to us by a friend. We normally would not have visited here but are very pleased that we did so. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. We stayed in the main old town of Funchal. The beach is very European (stoney), but our hotel had a nice pool area to cool off from the hot weather. Just outside the hotel were 30 plus restaurants in the small cobbled streets of the old town. We had a lot of fun choosing what one to eat at each night and had some wonderful meals here all seafood of course. Even tried limpets and periwinkles!! They are very proud of their seafood, rightly so and very friendly people. The scenery of our tour around the island was stunning, being a volcanic island with many hills and cliffs. A highlight was the standing out on a glass bottom promontory on the 2nd highest cliff face in the world, amazing although not good if you don’t like heights.
The Algarve Coast of Portugal
From here we went to the Algarve Coast looking for a few days of relaxation in the sun before heading back to London. We stayed a luxurious resort in Falesia. This was a most wonderful 5plus resort away from the crowded seaside town resorts with a magnificent pool complex and a walkway down the beautiful white sandy beach. We like the separate adult only pool area (as it was school holidays) where we enjoyed our sangria each day. We had one private tour of the coastline visiting the various seaside towns which we thoroughly enjoyed especially Lagos which was crowded but beautiful. We did eat at the hotel but got a taxi a couple of nights to the nearby town of Villamoura which had a marina full of great restaurants but needed to get there reasonably early as it became very busy but a great atmosphere.
Portugal, the place to visit
Normally when we finish a trip on the debrief you would maybe change something, but we found on this holiday we would do everything exactly the same. If you enjoy laid back friendly people and great seafood with a mixture of old European feel along with the wonderful Algarve coastline we would strongly recommend Portugal as a place you should visit.
